Rawal Jaisal founded Jaisalmer in 1156. The city lies near the extreme western edge of Rajasthan, about 100km east of the border with Pakistan. It is called the “Golden City” because of the color of the sandstone that is used for construction in that area. The sandstone is particulalry soft and therefore easily carved to create exceptionally detailed facades to the buildings, the most notable example being the Patwon Ki Haveli.

The elephant ride up to the Amber fort outside of Jaipur is an amazing experience even if it is full of tourists and touts when you get on the back of the elephant and look at the impressive fort looming above you can’t help but be impressed
I sat in the back of a jeep whilst driving through some very rural areas, the school children ran after us and were very excited by the site of a foreigner. I snapped some shots from the back of the car as we drove down the road with the children in pursuit
